ABSTRACT

Five teachers, serving as facilitators, move around the Plaza to guide and keep groups in touch with one another. A CBS special broadcast described it as a "school for the twenty-first century."

Are we ready for this kind of environment? According to Caine and Caine (1997), "The Creative Learning Plaza will call for what we mean by brain-based teaching. It also matches our view of one way that schools of tomorrow may be organized. We also believe that teachers will not be able to function in this type of environment without a radical view of learning and teaching." An example of such a school is in Alameda Unified School District, Alameda, CA. During my conversations with one of the directors of the company, he added that students too, are not ready for this environment. In fact, he commented that in Alameda County, it can take from four to six months before students are able to function independent of a teacher's constant lead. Once they are comfortable with teachers who behave not only as facilitators but also as learners, students are then able to use the technological tools to solve problems they generate.
