Education today transcends the goals of an agrarian society and must meet the demands of a technological society in which people from all parts of the world work together to find solutions for past, current, and future problems. Mathematics is valuable in this process. (NCTM, 1989, p. 3)

Societal changes necessitate changes in educational goals. Because this book deals with teaching mathematics in a block, we address the five new goals for mathematics as defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
