Problem-Solving Process book
The first Standard for Mathematical Practice is "Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them" (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2012b). Problem solving has traditionally been a challenge for many students, whether in the primary grades or in high school. Knowing "how to teach" problem solving can be an equal challenge for the teacher. One of the difficulties when facilitating problem solving lies in the variety of problems that students encounter as well as the multiple strategies that can be applied to solving them. Another obstacle facing teachers and students is the reading that is required for "making sense of problems." For some students, this is the first roadblock in finding that "entry point" to engage in the problem.
