ABSTRACT

Schools are multiplexes—multifaceted and complex places. Schools today serve students of many races, ethnicities, languages, cultures, religions, economic conditions, geographies, and other diversities. Students in U.S. schools are White, African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and of other and mixed backgrounds. 1 They live in urban, suburban, and rural communities in families with more or less formal education and in varied socioeconomic situations. Students live with one or two parents, grandparents, foster parents, guardians, same sex parents, and other caregivers. 2 They include English Language Learners, gifted learners, and children with other learning differences and special needs.
