ABSTRACT

In Colonial America, there were people known as pamphleteers who attempted to get their ideas across by distributing and posting notices. The posting of notices is a time-honored means of communication. The Post It Up strategy is designed to afford students and teachers opportunities to make public their ideas and opinions. The commentary should be brief enough to write on a Post-it note or a small square piece of paper. Post It Up communicates without necessarily talking or directly engaging others. It is particularly useful if one is attempting to create an atmosphere of civility, respect, and mutual support. Shelly Wasserman's sixth grade class has a Post It Up bulletin board that is entirely maintained by the students. The students know the bulletin board is theirs, and they value having a public space in which to express themselves. One of the things they came up with is the idea of having different themes for posting.
