ABSTRACT

The pacing for a week of proofreading follows. The week of proofreading parallels the routine of previous weeks of the Writing Cycle. Monday and Wednesday focus on student's work on a proofreading strategy like the Proofreading Triads presented here. Tuesday provides time for you to work with Proofreading Triads that need coaching while other students engage in a word study. Thursday provides time for sentence study and Friday closes the proofreading week with small and whole-group author's chair. The first time you use the Proofreading Triads strategy, help the students assess the degree to which they met expectations. As a student triad completes the first two paragraphs on their own, step up for a brief teacher conference. Most triads catch on quickly when you hold them accountable for finding and correcting their own errors. The students quickly learn that the standard for proofreading is a group responsibility 15 minutes for correcting errors in each paper.
