ABSTRACT
When I was a kid, our next door neighbor was Mr. Al, or as I liked to call him, Mr. Owl-as if he were a character in one of the Frog and Toad books. (Embarrassingly, I really did think that was his name.) His back yard was the cut-through we used to get to a friend’s house, so we saw him almost every day sitting on a lawn chair reading Consumer Reports. He was always researching his next big purchase. There was the car, the dishwasher, the freezer. The trouble was he never actually bought anything. Just as he would zero in on a final choice, the models would change, spurring him to start the entire selection process all over again. He never took action. In this chapter, three common situations that keep schools from taking action will be explored: paralysis by analysis, the indecisive school improvement team, and the school improvement dissertation. Root causes will then be identified and solutions provided through school improvement structure and processes.
