ABSTRACT

There is an old saying that the best way to get in the last word is to apologize. This saying may be true in a great number of settings, but it may be most applicable and effective in working with difficult parents. We have found that the single best defuser in any situation is to apologize. Many educators do this. However, the specific wording that we use is essential because it can allow us to calm the waters and yet retain our dignity. It is very difficult to say, “I was wrong….” It is even more difficult to say that when it is not true. But there is one way we can approach all situations that will help satisfy even the most aggressive parents while at the same time allowing us to be honest in our approach. Let’s take a look at this method.
