ABSTRACT

A popular children’s song has a verse that goes, “The driver on the bus said, ”Move on back, move on back, move on back.’” However, nowhere in the song does a student say, “Why don’t you try and make me!” Thus, we know the driver was not the driver of a school bus. As assistant principal, one of my responsibilities was to handle the bus reports that drivers sent forward for approximately 600 eighth grade students who rode the bus each day. Well, as you can imagine, this was quite a challenge. In addition to the potentially varying skills of the 30+ drivers, seldom did any of them actually observe the entire sequence of events that occurred which resulted in the students receiving a disciplinary bus “ticket.” If we think managing a classroom is a challenge, just imagine trying to manage two entire classrooms while driving! Anyhow, what often resulted were bus reports that were potentially debatable.
