ABSTRACT

In fairness to the above-mentioned authors, the condemnation of our schools was probably not their goal while writing these books. In fact, in defense of some of them, we can say with certainty that it was not their goal. However, a mere reading of these book titles clearly suggests that there is something wrong with the schools our children are attending. Furthermore, there is an implication that parents must do something about it. With this in mind, what kind of message are parents receiving when they look at these titles on bookstore shelves? Are they receiving a message touting the quality of our work and applauding our efforts? Obviously not. It is true that you cannot judge a book by its cover. You can, however, have feelings invoked by the wording of titles and the intonations they suggest. This is one of the reasons journalists give for the headlines we find in our daily newspapers. Because a vast majority of the population does not read a newspaper from cover to cover, journalists must use article titles to “grab” readers and make them want to read.
