ABSTRACT

In the light of historical precedents, the conduct of Americans during the Second World War was restrained. The United Nations as an idea marched at the forefront of the Allied battle column but for the soldiers the only war aims they were prepared to acknowledge were noble aspirations as the full tank of petrol and the resumption of the World Series. The Pacific War had been the poor relation of the global battlefields. President Roosevelt, in the face of public opposition, had agreed that the primary objective was the destruction of Germany and that the Japanese attacks must be contained until the war in Europe had been won. This chapter also talks about the Since You Went Away which is a perfect example of Hollywood film-making at its best, tugging constantly at real emotions but drawing back coyly before dreaded 'realism' spoiled the poignancy of the drama.
