ABSTRACT

A new class of people was coming into being, picturegoers. At first they were drawn from the untutored and the unenlightened, including the young. They liked the cinema's way of narrating stories. They did not have to read—except occasional subtitles—or even to listen, except almost unconsciously to the background music. Without being called upon to use their imaginations they could watch the incidents being portrayed and identify themselves with one of the characters. It was all so vividly real. They could even fall for the heroine or succumb to the hero's blandishments.
