ABSTRACT

This chapter considers leap over obstacles to multiple theory use, communicate with speakers of diverse theoretical languages, and develop intentionally an integrative multi-theory practice model. It presents four major sites for knowledge development and use: the academic university, the research laboratory, the helping agency or organization, and the life space of client systems. Effective theory use requires the acquisition of a significant amount of theoretical knowledge, the mastery of a wide range of theorizing competencies, and the cultivation of habits of theory study and reflective theorizing. The applied scientist expects that resources for theory selection and application limited while the basic scientist anticipates funding and other support for theory development and testing. There are several potential roadblocks to theory use related to the need for communication and cooperation across the four knowledge use sites. The translation of scientific theories and knowledge is difficult.
