ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe a framework for the development of leadership programs. This framework is important for two reasons. First, it provides a rationale for the perspectives of leadership development that we take throughout this book. Second, it reinforces our belief that a similar rationale is important for the design of any leadership program that aims to meet the needs of any student or group of students, irrespective of their age. With such a framework, this book — and the programs designed by a teacher to develop leadership potential — will have a much firmer foundation. Such a foundation helps to justify the content of this book and of any leadership program, enabling criticism of any aspect of either to be much more specific and constructive.
