ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces knowledge-based performance management as an approach for the managers of cities and their regions for addressing the question posed. It deals with the management of knowledge in cities and regions. The chapter discusses the ways of managing knowledge, it is necessary to explore the managerial implications of the key issues covered by the other research questions. In order to examine the knowledge-based urban development (KBUD) phenomenon at managerial level the concept of "performance" is used. In the management literature, performance is a commonly used concept in describing the level of success in companies, public sector organizations and networks. "Performance management" deals with the management of efficiency and effectiveness of activities. Concept variations such as digital territories and smart cities rely on extensive digital grid management and big data analysis, contributing to improve aspects of transit, public transportation, security and, in general, public service management.
