ABSTRACT
Points, badges and leaderboards (referred to in unison as PBLs) are the game elements most commonly associated with gamified systems. But there is a host of dynamic, rich and varied game concepts that can be explored and applied to our practice in addition to PBLs. As gamified systems continue to grow more commonplace and evolve, they increasingly require innovative approaches towards design and implementation. Not only can we learn from what is effective in current gamified systems, but we can also gain a significant amount of know - ledge and insight by understanding what makes videogames, social net working games, mobile games, pervasive games and table-top games successful. This chapter investigates game design concepts and their application in GS design.
