ABSTRACT

In discussing the upbringing of ethnic groups in the North Caucasus it is important to understand their position in Russian society, as status is very important for any ethnic group for its self-esteem and confidence. In addition to the geographical meaning, ‘Caucasus’ has social and political connotations as part of the Russian public discourse. Opinion poll results reveal a widespread hostility towards people identified as ‘Caucasians’ or ‘persons of Caucasian nationality’ (Levada Centre 2010, 2011, 2012). In some cases, discrimination, exclusion and even violence against Caucasians are organized, institutionalized and embedded in the policy of public organizations, state and local authorities; at times they are seen in the role of the enemy (Levinson 2003).
