ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by accepting Victoria Stewart's claim that the Diary's 'inconsistencies, uncertainties and disturbances to subjectivity' are important. It then, explores Stewart's arguments in relation to a novel that offers the opportunity of 'looking beyond': Michelle Cliff's Abeng (1984). Given the complexity of Cliff's novel, the chapter opens with a preliminary discussion of some of the important similarities and differences between Cliff's Clare and Anne Frank. It provides a detailed reading of Clare's engagement with Frank and then considers the role of the narrator and the place of the Diary in the narrator's comments. Finally, the chapter offers a reading of Cliff's autobiographical poem "A Visit to the Secret Annex" in order to offer some remarks about the place of Frank in Cliff's writings and the ways in which the readings assist in developing Stewart's claims.
