ABSTRACT
The attempt by political elites to defi ne or ‘frame’ issues in a way that the mass public can accept and agree with has been largely documented. Elite discourse continuously provides citizens with information about the ongoing political problems and exposes them to suggestions about how such issues should be understood (Berinsky 2001; Druckman 2001a; Druckman 2004). Sometimes, when people engage in an issue, they are exposed to one-sided communication. Most of the time, however, since politics is by defi nition a competitive game, multiple and contrasting frames will appear in the news media.
