ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the global conditions, trends and challenges for the main high-capacity transport options: metro, light rail and BRT. Such public transport modes offer solutions for improving urban mobility, quality of life and the environment in both developed and developing countries, providing a competitive alternative to private motor vehicles. An efficient system facilitates seamless movement within and between cities, which in turn is essential for urban functionality and prosperity. 1 Metros, light rail and BRTs are suitable for key corridors in cities and as part of larger, integrated public transport systems.
