ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the processes for online course development and strategies for course management. It reviews the approaches to faculty training and it examines assessment strategies for faculty from several different perspectives. The chapter describes the ways in which faculty members have to effectively interact with other stakeholders in the university to build high-quality online educational programs. It also discusses additional issues students face in managing their time in online courses. While most universities require faculty who want to teach online to consult with instructional designers, instructors who make extensive use of educational technology often do not have to work with third parties and the expectations of both the faculty and the instructional designers are not always clear. Many faculty development programs are aimed at new faculty teaching online for the first time. Consequently, student evaluations can help faculty better understand what works and what does not work when teaching online.
