ABSTRACT

The creation of low-energy buildings and communities is a multifaceted problem, with a large number of variables to be successfully juggled and balanced. These variables range from those well within the designers’ and constructors’ control, to others dependent on the decisions and behaviour of owners and users, but many more are beyond any immediate influence at all. Resolution is not likely to be achieved by rigorous following of rules or preset formulae, but by using a basket of approaches and a combination of intuition and hard calculation in their deployment.
