ABSTRACT

A highly accomplished professional women come across patriarchal constraints that are not so blatantly manifest or discernible. This chapter presents the partner choice strategies of women and these are found to carry much promise for helping women bypass discrimination and to ultimately realize their marriage goals. However, for the women in this study there were some who, despite their strong accomplishments, could still attract suitors, or already had partners who presented them with much desired marriage proposals. Some women like Connie who were more pessimistic about finding an ideal partnership at all, and this had led her to contemplate a life of singledom. Compared to traditional gendered relationships which were more prone to becoming exploitative and unequal, the obligation-free company of friends would sometimes be deemed more satisfying and liberating. Finally this chapter shows these partner choice strategies used by the women studied to combat patriarchal control reflects their higher egalitarian expectations and lower economic demands.
