ABSTRACT

“Sportvision: The Texts and Tech of Sports TV” examines the history and current context of the “bells and whistles” that make sports TV programming, generally, the most visually striking and innovative programming across the TV landscape. Textual analysis of ABC’s Monday Night Football in the 1970s, FOX’s “glow puck” experiment of the 1990s, and current “videogamegraphic” aesthetics of the “EA Sports era” put sports TV’s graphic interventions and appeal into historical and cultural context.
