ABSTRACT

Like the themes of other chapters, such as community and equality, fun relates to many aspects of the school and weaves through the other chapters. There is no English word for the broad mixture of things that are interesting, satisfying, amusing, rewarding, maybe exciting, challenging or difficult, and are enjoyable and worthwhile in themselves, for their own sake, as well as being useful for extra purposes such as gaining skill and knowledge. We use ‘fun’ to mean all these things. This chapter looks at the enjoyable aspects of everyday school life: learning and teaching, drama, assemblies, dinner time, encouraging high selfesteem and inter-dependency, making decisions, and the extra fun activities.
