ABSTRACT

Planning a research project begins with choosing a topic to research, and then writing a research proposal that describes the aims, objectives and rationale of the research (including its key research questions), the theoretical framework, the literature in the field, and the methodology and data collection methods that will be adopted in order to carry out the research. This chapter will look at how to choose a worthwhile topic to research in the field of education, and will consider the importance of choosing a topic that is interesting (to the researcher as well as to others), relevant, and feasible. It will then move on to consider how to formulate a project title and key research questions from the general topic that was selected, and how to formulate the rationale of the project. The next section will discuss the purpose and importance of the research proposal and provide a suggested format for writing the different sections of the proposal.
