ABSTRACT

An organisation’s safety culture is the product of the prevalent values, attitudes, perceptions and shared behaviours of its workers, and their collective influence on how safety is approached, managed and sustained in the workplace.

A positive safety culture is characterised by the endemic perception of the value of safety practices, improved workplace health and safety and enhanced organisational performance.

In this chapter, we’ll explore safety culture, its definition and history, how it can be measured and assessed, why leadership commitment is so important to its ongoing development and how a weak safety culture can often lead to disaster.
