ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the environment in which aircraft fly. The reader will gain an understanding of three important features of the earth's atmosphere: air pressure, temperature and density. The underpinning theory for these three characteristics is explained to provide the basis of aircraft flight instruments and guidance. The chapter concludes with a review of the international standard atmosphere.
