ABSTRACT

Air data and gyroscopic instruments are referred to as the primary flight instruments. They are arranged in the instrument panel in one of several conventional ways – the basic ‘flying tee’ or its derivative, the ‘six pack’.The instruments can contain their own sensors, e.g. in the case of an altimeter with internal capsule; alternatively, the sensor can be remote, e.g. a centralized air-data computer. Older aircraft that were installed with electromechanical instruments are often upgraded with modern electronic flight displays, featuring the same basic functions as electromechanical instruments, but with additional features. Electronic flight bags, although not flight instruments, are included in this chapter under the subject of electronic flight displays.
