ABSTRACT

The Doe Library at the University of California at Berkeley had a full inventory in the 1940s. Library policies change, and the manner in which materials are handled varies from place to place and from one time to a another. Special Collections Librarian Robert Schnare mentions that there is a Copernicus incanabula in the collection which bears an ink stamp on its title page reading: “US Military Library.” The people who stole 153 volumes from the Carleton College Library in Northfield, Minnesota knew what they wanted and had a knowledge of the value of what they stole: 123 titles dealing with the exploration of the New World. Larger libraries tend to have the resources to give their holdings proper attention. An incident which is illustrative of a concern for security concerns the Rockford, Illinois Public Library. Small New England libraries, had Frost first editions on their shelves.
