ABSTRACT

The guard may be an ambassador of company goodwill, furnishing information, assisting visitors, and regulating foot traffic and vehicles. The job of guarding a museum requires a modern approach, employing techniques proven in other security situations. The attendant or security guard should occupy a worthy position and be conscience of holding a post of responsibility. At the New York Public Library the guards are members of the building and maintenance staff. Observing people and spotting those who are potential threats or troublemakers is of great importance in the guard-security function. The guards they supply are bonded; they are highly trained and motivated persons who can function at various levels in any organization. Courtesy and respect are essential in the carrying out of the guard’s duties. The proliferation of “rent a cop” firms which have placed untrained and often club-wielding individuals in stores here and there has given a bad image to all guard services.
