ABSTRACT

The presentation of manuscripts to libraries sometimes caused concern and even consternation. The interest and dedication which the New York Public Library showed in its work with manuscripts were unique at that time. Prior to being named keeper of manuscripts, George Washington had worked at the Library of Congress, had been archivist for the Municipal Archives of New York City and an archivist in the Marine Corps, and had assisted in the New York Public Library Manuscript Division. As to the security of Archives and Manuscripts of the New York Public Library, it has always been fairly strict. Yet there is a safeguard at the New York Public Library, in that those who use manuscripts are in general known to the staff. Keeper of Manuscripts Paul Rugen firmly believes that thefts, when they occur, should be made known to the world at large and that prosecution should be swift and severe.
