Stroke is the sudden onset of a neurologic deficit related to disruption of blood supply to an area of the brain. This may be a result of damage to the brain tissue from leaking of blood (hemorrhage) or from ischemic loss of brain tissue following an occlusion of a blood vessel from either a thrombus or an embolus. Stroke is common in the United States, currently ranking third among causes of death.
