      ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. This paper addresses certain anatomic and hemodynamic characteristics of the central nervous system that may modify the pathological and clinical features of stroke. Illustrated case studies emphasize common clinical situations in which stroke occurs; the repair process in the brain following infarction; the effects of brain herniation; and the significance of anastomotic channels and collateral circulation in protecting the brain from ischemic injury.
