ABSTRACT

THIS chapter mostly includes discussions of Spencer’s four educational essays—“The Art of Education” (item 128), “The Moral Discipline of Children” (item 137), “Physical Training” (item 142), and “What Knowledge Is of Most Worth” (item 144)—and the book that they came to form, namely, Education: Intellectual, Moral, and Physical (item 31). The first three essays were retitled for their appearance in Education, where they made up Chapters 2-4 (“Intellectual Education,” “Moral Education,” and “Physical Education”). The fourth essay became the first chapter of the book.
