ABSTRACT

THIS chapter lists biographical materials and the broader or more general studies of Spencer’s thought. Among periodical titles pertaining to Spencer, there are more than a dozen—published between 1871 and 1935—indexed under “portrait.” Those—the majority—that are only reproductions of pictures of Spencer are not included. Book reviews are classified according to the subject of the book and the reviewer’s emphasis. Accordingly, reviews of Spencer’s wide-ranging Essays (item 33) are listed in the present as well as certain other chapters, as appropriate. The majority of the reviews of Various Fragments (item 75) and Facts and Comments (item 36)—both collections of Spencer’s miscellaneous essays—are included in this chapter. (The remainder are listed according to the reviewer’s emphasis—for example, a review of Facts and Comments that stresses Spencer’s five essays on music will be found in Chapter 16.) All reviews of David Duncan’s Life and Letters of Herbert Spencer (item 419) and Spencer’s Autobiography (item 23) are included in the present chapter. Reviews of Spencer’s completed philosophical project—A System of Synthetic Philosophy—are also 296included. Additionally, the component books of Spencer’s philosophical system—First Principles (item 16), The Principles of Biology (item 17), The Principles of Psychology (item 18), The Principles of Sociology (item 19), and The Principles of Ethics (item 20)—are frequently mentioned in general ways throughout this chapter. More specialized treatments of these and other titles make up the following chapters.
