ABSTRACT

Aggregated reality is a constructed, abstract and simpler reality. Thus, a new reality is constructed by the use of abstract concepts and measurements designed around the idea of objectivity. One form of subjectivity places value on the perspective of the actor, what the actor sees and believes about his or her social and natural reality. This reality is a mathematical one because it is based on rates of behaviors, indices of social variables, and averages. Researchers’ use of terms such as “subjects” serve to detach actors from their social reality and demean their subjective interpretations. By constructing research terms in an atmosphere that values objectivity, the subtle implications of using those terms validates the very valuing. Thus, researchers need to devote more time to being in the field, directly observing subjects, talking with subjects and, most of all, understanding subjects.
