ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies several arrest history Driving Under the Influence (DUI) subgroups and examines each on the following two dimensions: sociodemographic characteristics; and, social psychological characteristics. These offenders are somewhat older than the First-time DUI Offenders, and the DUI and Traffic Offenders, but are younger than the DUI Recidivists. The arrest history analysis of the total sample discloses a mixed bag of recidivists in that nine out of every ten had been arrested at least once for DUI prior to the instant arrest. When classified by drinking type, a large percentage of the total sample is found to be in the excessive and problem drinker category. One of the most important findings of this analysis is that although problem drinkers vary from 50 percent of the DUI and Traffic Offenders to 87 percent of the DUI Recidivists, many deny that they have drinking problems.
