ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the organization and structure of Cuban publishing, outlining all of the publishing houses and other institutions currently publishing books and periodicals nationwide. Among the most notable aspects of the Cuban literary culture that evolved from 1959 on are its inclusive and participatory nature and the outreach projects to increase the level of participation of the masses in cultural life. Literary sociology, insofar as it is concerned to examine the relationship of literature and society over time, has alternated between taking as its object of study, the reader- following what a group or community reads and its responses at a given point in time-and the writer examining how society is presented in literature and what values are transmitted by its creators through the narrative voice and vision. The oldest of the postrevolutionary literary contests is that of Casa de las Americas, held for the first time in October of 1959.
