ABSTRACT

At present, Cuban publishing is regrouping itself, at all levels, establishing new priorities and seeking new international collaborators. Many of the policies in force through the 1980s will no longer hold, as a consequence of Cuba’s having to place itself within a globalized international market. At this juncture, and from the perspective of literary culture in the 1980s, this chapter examines editorial policy and the effects of the blockade on the publishing industry. It outlines the objectives and operation of Gente Nueva, the publishing house that handles Cuban literary production for children and young readers. Throughout the 1980s, most of the titles on Letras Cubanas publications lists are recent works; in past years, together with contemporary literature, they published and disseminated works by founding authors of the Cuban literary tradition of the nineteenth century. The classic authors of the nineteenth century have taken their place within special collections, notably the Basic Library of Cuban Literature.
