ABSTRACT

This chapter develops a strong, physician-led health care organization. The chapter presents a basis for leadership by and active participation of physicians in the organization and creates opportunities to promote training in leadership. It encourages, guides, and supports the involvement of physicians in all aspects of the practice or health care organization. The chapter evaluates the needs for training on the basis of organizational expectations and specific activities for internal and external training are designed to meet organizational needs and needs for leadership by physicians. Eisenberg reminds to consider timing in regard to determining the effectiveness of education and feedback. Medical education should prepare students to practice in their communities' health care systems. The role of management is to facilitate leadership by its physicians through goal-directed participation. The manner in which the physicians' group organizes its integration of primary and secondary care will distinguish it in the marketplace.
