ABSTRACT

In Mosul Layard was visited by cawal Yusuf who invited the entire company, including the Vice-Consul, to the holy site of the Yezidis to take part in the great annual feast. Layard had already been there once, but this time he was the guest of honour and was expected to explain in detail what the new agreement with the Sultan meant. This became a memorable event where he was allowed to take part in all the most secret and closed ritual events. He wrote down the texts of the hymns and prayers which formed part of the rites, and in his book one even finds in an appendix the notes to the accompanying music.
