There was nothing accidental about Botta's appointment or his archaeological activities in Mosul. The creation of the post and the choice of Botta to fill it were due to the activities of Jules Mohl, a man who served as secretary for the Asiatic Society and who had a considerable influence in scientific circles in Paris at this time.
