ABSTRACT

The Scarsdale Medical Diet arose out of Dr. Herman Tarnower's involvement over the years in counseling patients to eat and drink sensibly as a means of weight control He eventually had his suggestions typed up and mimeographed so as to save time. Ultimately, word of mouth awareness of the program was picked up by the mass media; newspaper and magazine articles spurred thousands of people to call or write Tarnower asking for information about the diet. Anthony Dias Blue, in a report for Sunday Woman, termed it "The Ultimate Diet". Tarnower eventually elaborated upon his ideas in a book, The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet Plus Dr. Tarnower's Lifetime Keep-Slim Program, in response to popular demand. Unlike many popular diets, the Scarsdale program was generally accepted if not wildly supported on the basis of its more inflated claims by medical and dietary professionals due to its sound, reasoned advice, based upon time-honored nutritional concepts, as well as Tarnower's solid credentials.
