ABSTRACT

Participants should make exercise a part of their daily routine. They will have to decide on the best time, but consider the following: It is best to exercise when they have the least pain, they have the least stiffness, they are not tired, and their medication is having maximal effect. If any exercises cause pain, the participant should immediately stop doing the particular exercise and notify the instructor. Individuals interested in leading exercise programs should be trained and certified by a local YMCA in 'Fitness Leadership'. Many older adults joining an exercise program may not have exercised in many years, their bones are more fragile and often they are not as flexible as in their youth. As the instructor develops knowledge of flexibility, endurance, and strengthening exercises he/she will be able to design exercise routines using the various apparatus described below. Cardiovascular exercise or strenuous activity could aggravate a pre-existing condition and possibly cause serious problems.
