ABSTRACT

The trial that began at Providence the fifth of January 1920 differed substantially from the one at Newport the previous August. These proceedings occurred in a federal court presided over by Judge Arthur L. Brown and heard by a jury of twelve men, so allegations of local bias or corrupt decisions would be more difficult to prove. An official transcript recorded proceedings. And whereas the earlier case had avoided public attention, beginning on January 6, 1920, the influential Providence Journal as well as several Newport papers reported on the trial, initiating an interest in the sex scandal which brought it to national attention.
