ABSTRACT

Departments should also provide the URL for the library’s catalog, as this will encourage borrowers to check the catalog and verify the ownership and disposition of an item before sending a request. Most Interlibrary Loan (ILL) departments use either OCLC or RLIN, or both to receive the bulk of their ILL lending requests. Unlike borrowing, which can be complicated, the procedures for lending materials are relatively straightforward and some of the easiest to streamline. Most every library reviews and sorts its incoming requests using certain criteria, and annotates the forms with information used in processing the requests. The retrieval process is usually done by student assistants or by full- or part-time paraprofessional staff. Retrieval staff should be familiar with the location of materials within the library and with any special resources in non-standard locations such as an archives or storage facility, Government Documents and Microforms, and branch libraries.
