ABSTRACT

Processing of materials is another task to be performed during the Borrowing workday. Depending upon available delivery services, the department may receive shipments of UPS, Fedex and US Mail materials at one time, or the department may receive individual deliveries throughout the workday. Throughout the day, borrowing staff members respond to patrons in a variety of ways: by telephone, by e-mail, or in person. If the Interlibrary loan department has a service desk, Borrowing staff members may rotate hours at the service desk, assisting patrons with their materials and fielding service queries, including “status checks.” After reviewing the day’s workload of new requests, Borrowing staff members plan their day accordingly. After reviewing new requests, the borrowing procedure continues with the search for matching bibliographic records and the location of potential suppliers. For Conditional messages, a staff member might check the message from the lending library against the originals, and respond appropriately to the conditional message.
