ABSTRACT

A borrowing policy document that describes Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services in detail should be available for patron review. The borrowing policy should be as liberal as possible to allow patrons to derive maximum benefit from ILL. Interlibrary Borrowing is a service which provides access to the collections of libraries throughout the world. ILL services should be available to any library patron possessing a valid library card. Some libraries permit all students and faculty to use Interlibrary Loan, while others restrict usage to certain user categories. Most ILL departments will attempt to obtain almost anything a patron might request. ILL departments often have a number of methods for patrons to place requests: e-mail, paper and online forms, fax or telephone. Departments may wish to include additional information explaining the ILL process so that patrons understand that materials may come from a wide variety of sources with varying service levels and turnaround times.
