ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the opportunities to overcome the barriers through improved public awareness, improved delivery of state-of-the-art treatments, and reducing financial barriers to treatment. Psychergonomics is concerned with peeling back the obvious surface causes of an illness, utilizing wellness education, and practicing prevention as the means of addressing thelife activities of mind, body, and spirit which impact wellness and the indirect costs of health care in the workplace. Mental illnesses are not as easily classified as are physical illnesses. Symptoms may vary in both kind and intensity compared to the symptoms of physical illnesses. In addition, a social stigma continues to be associated with mental illness which keeps some people from seeking treatment. Stressors are life events, real or imagined, that cause a stress response. Stressors may be physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, environmental, or economic, but they may not be avoided.
